February Angling News:-
1:- Caistron Lake – Day permits for the for Caistron lake will be available as normal in 2012 season and the fishery will also have season tickets which consist of full season for £500 gives 20 days on the lake, 10 days river fishing for salmon and 10 days river for Browns and with the salmon fishing alone worth around £350 this seems good value. Further details can be given by Cliff on 07944178045 who can also adapt the days on each type of fishing to suit.
2:-Top 6 of 2011 season - the flies I caught the most fish on during the 2011 season were Zonker U.V. Black, Dawsons Hot Tail Straggle Goldhead, Belises Blue, White Fritz Redhead, Flexi Floss Bloodworm Red and Montana Variation.
Have to mention amongst these are 2 new flies to the site which I caught really well with were a Magic yellow Lure and Cats Whiskers Yellow Head which I am sure will feature heavily for me next season.
3:- Knitsley Mill which saw the bottom lake cleared of weed and was stocked again before re opening at the end of November will stay open over right through the winter including the Christmas period with the 2 tickets available being £10 for an 8 hour sporting and £10 for 4 hour keep 1 fish then catch and release.
4:- Killer Shrimp – this new pattern which took a little longer than expected to get all the materials for is now available. It is a fly which is fished under a strike indicator. This is a copy of the Killer Shrimp which invaded Grafham last year and it has worked both at Grafham and fisheries elsewhere.
5:- Best selling NJAF patterns in January are Montana Nymph, Cut Throat Cats, Cut Throat Boobies and Magic Yellow Lure Gold Bead.
6:- Langley Dam re opens as usual for the start of the 2012 season on 1st February. Other featured fisheries open for fishing in February are Moffat Knitsley Mill and Whinney
Loch
7:- On fishing reports now after the featured fly review is an annual review of each fishery.
8:- Sweethope Loughs – Sadly the future of Sweethope is in doubt for the 2012 season and the owners are looking to any clubs, syndicates or interested parties initially in the area who may be interested in running the fishery. This is after a troubled 2011 season which saw its manager leave mid way through the year before it then had reduced fishing days before closing early for the end of season.
9:- Watch – Bill Taylor who runs Watch fishery and Tweeddale millennium will also add Glencorse RSV fishery to his name for 2012 season and this will be a boat only venue opening in April 2012. For more detailed info and photos of the fishery look on glencorsersv.co.uk
10:- Watch Fishery – will open for the 2012 season on Saturday 31st March. There has been no price increases and bookings are now being taken.
11:- Tips and tactics for 2012 season will start again in February.
Featured Fly of the Month Zonker UV Black.
Hook – size 10 longshank.
Silk – Black.
Body – Black U.V. Fritz.
Wing and Tail – Black zonker strip tied in at the bend and eye of the hook.
This is a pattern for fans of Black Fritz patterns. As with lures like this when fish are taking it you have sessions where you catch a lot of fish rather than picking up one or two fish on it regularly throughout the year.
Like other Black Fritz patterns it can be fished well bumped along near the surface although personally I have caught best fishing it on sink tip and intermediate lines with a slower retrieve and one fishery in particular where I have found fish to go particularly mad for this over the last couple of years is Knitsley Mill.
I have to add that I have tried many colours of U.V. Fritz and not found them better or even as good as other standard types of Fritz so no longer use them except for U.V Black which with the added Zonker strip I think works to great effect and givers this the edge over standard Black Fritz patterns.
